THE CONTEXT OF TF-CLIMA

During Brazil’s presidency of the G20, it was established that one of the focuses of action would be climate change, which culminated in a Task Force on the topic, TF-Climate. This is a strategic space because the world’s largest economies are responsible for around 85% of global GDP and 3/4 of global greenhouse gas emissions. Precisely because of this prioritization, for the first time, the Sherpa (which brings together representatives of G20 leaders) and Finance (which brings together the countries’ financial authorities) tracks will work together. The objective is to strengthen the role of national transition plans and platforms; and to achieve a renewed agenda for the involvement of the financial sector in climate action, in order to complement public financing and contribute to an ambitious investment agenda for mitigation, adaptation and fair transitions, aligned with the 1.5°C objective, arising from the Paris Agreement.

THE SEMINAR

It is in the context of this debate that five civil society organizations – the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP) – which hosts the Executive Secretariat of the TF-Clima Expert Group -, the Open Society Foundations (OSF), the Climate and Society Institute (iCS), the Brazilian Development Association (ABDE) and WRI Brasil, with the support of the G20 TF-CLIMA coordination, came together to organize this Seminar.

Based on what has already been produced on the topic in the different spaces of the G20 and by leaders and experts on the aforementioned topics, the International Seminar aims to bring together decision-makers, high-level government representatives, civil society representatives and also members of the Expert Group to take stock of the proposals already formulated and to provide input for the report that will be presented. With this, we intend to build on the efforts already made to date and strengthen discussions that can culminate in feasible and truly innovative measures.
